Two generations — and they don't share parts

Before ordering anything, establish which generation you're dealing with. The 2022 model year was a complete front-end redesign — wider grille, slimmer LED headlights, revised bumper profile. The Gen 1 (2017–2021) and Gen 2 (2022 onwards) look visually related but share no bumper, headlight or guard components.

Within each generation there are additional splits: petrol vs EV (different front bumpers due to the EV's closed grille design), and grade level differences (Vibe, Excite, Essence) that affect fog light configurations and trim details. A 2022 ZS EV Essence is not the same parts job as a 2022 ZS petrol Vibe, even though both are "2022 Gen 2" vehicles.

The VIN encodes all of this. If you're ordering without a VIN and just using model year, you might get the generation right but still end up with the wrong variant. It's worth the 30 seconds to grab the VIN from the door jamb sticker first.

Front Bumpers

The front bumper assembly is the most frequently damaged component in the MG ZS fleet. A frontal impact — even at low speed — can damage multiple front-end components simultaneously. The parts that commonly need replacing together include:

• Front grille (may be integrated or a separate part depending on generation)
• Fog light assemblies and bezels

Headlights

Gen 1 and Gen 2 MG ZS headlights look nothing alike and share no components. Gen 1 uses conventional halogen-based units with a more upright housing profile. Gen 2 uses slimmer LED assemblies with a DRL strip integrated into the top of the unit — a completely different part.

Within Gen 2, there's a further split: higher-grade models have adaptive (swivelling) headlights that are a different unit again from the standard fixed-beam version. Some models also have a front camera position near the headlight that affects the surrounding trim. Left and right are always separate assemblies with mirrored optics — ordering the wrong side is a common mistake on panel shop orders.

Fog Lights

MG ZS fog lights are integrated into the front bumper and are one of the most variant-sensitive parts on the vehicle. Each generation — and different grade levels within a generation — uses a different fog light housing shape and mounting configuration. Ordering the wrong variant is a common and frustrating mistake that delays repairs.

Guards and Fenders

Front guards are commonly co-damaged in side impacts or wider frontal collisions. The MG ZS front guard sits alongside the headlight and front bumper, and in most cases must be generation-matched since the guard profile follows the body line changes between Gen 1 and Gen 2.
